An ambient air filter recirculates room air through a filter. Extraction at a tool tries to capture dust where it is generated. Keep these functions separate in your workshop plan: an air cleaner is a supplementary measure, not a reason to remove the machine's extraction.
Read beyond the headline airflow
| Specification | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Air volume per hour | Which speed and test conditions does it describe? |
| Particle-size claim | What efficiency and test information accompanies it? |
| Filter stages | Which replacement parts are required? |
| Room-size claim | What assumptions did the maker use? |
| Mounting instructions | Which supports, clearances and fixings are specified? |
| Controls | Can you access them and service the filter in the proposed position? |
CCOHS's ventilation guidance explains that selection depends on the contaminant, particle characteristics, concentration and other operating conditions. A number of microns without supporting performance information is therefore an incomplete comparison.
Use room calculations carefully
For your own planning, room volume is length × width × height. Dividing a maker's airflow in cubic metres per hour by volume in cubic metres gives a theoretical number of room volumes per hour. This arithmetic assumes the stated flow is achieved; it does not describe actual mixing, capture at the breathing zone or exposure.
For example, a hypothetical room of 5 × 4 × 2.5 metres has a volume of 50 cubic metres. A hypothetical 500 cubic metre per hour flow gives 10 room volumes per hour. These are illustrative inputs, not a product specification, a target or a clearance-time recommendation.
Plan installation and servicing
Before buying, sketch where the unit could go and ask the manufacturer to confirm the position. Include access for cleaning and replacement, along with noise information and the specified electrical supply. Do not suspend equipment from an unverified support or improvise fixings.
Follow the maker's instructions for operation and filter maintenance. A timer setting or a less dusty-looking room cannot establish when airborne exposure is adequately controlled. Workplace assessment may require competent advice and measurements.
If your machine extraction is still unresolved, begin with workshop dust extraction. Consider the room filter after the source-capture arrangement, cleaning and RPE questions have been addressed.
